A mouse pops out
from a cash register.
He’s not here to buy anything…
no, it’s all self-serve.
He picks a piece
of popcorn kernel,
and takes his seat
upon an empty stool.
It’s dusty, sure,
but that suits him fine.
If he wants fine dining,
he’s sure to find
a feast in the
decrepit restaurant
across the street.
It might not be
up to building code,
but hey,
it’s close to home.
Sometimes, though,
you just want a little snack,
and the mouse sits back
with a perfect view
of an amusement park
that closed its gates
long ago.
The Ferris Wheel
turns no more,
its gears long since rusted.
The Coaster,
once host to many riders,
is half-collapsed,
its wicked loop
an open death trap.
The vines have reclaimed
the arcade games,
and a rabbit’s taken
the throwing range
as her new burrow.
It’s quiet as always,
no generators
to power the speakers
standing on the corner,
no dings or horns disturbing
the beautiful songs of nature.
The sun sets upon
the concert stage,
its wooden flooring
warped from rain,
and the mouse,
satisfied,
squeaks contentedly.
Another peaceful day.
