The quiet Sphinx gazes upon its foreign visitors,
each dressed in different textures.
It’s known many a face;
British, Ottoman, Roman, Egyptian…
their origin makes no difference,
they all will fall in time.
Still, though, it thinks…
there’s not much else to do in this arid land,
aside from counting grains of sand.
How many empires have fallen?
How many more are in decline?
If an empire dies,
and nothing’s left to remember it by,
was it really an empire?
