Day after day,
grain after sand grain…
Another layer forms
on the ocean floor,
a tapestry of the deep.
Down where history sleeps,
beyond the limits of memory,
forgotten by all…
All except the Earth herself.
Her notes are diligent.
Every catastrophe is
marked painstakingly
within her ancient records.
Each extinction,
another death…
but not a life forgotten.
Not entirely.
She’s not one for shows of sentimentality…
but it’d be such a shame to see
a feeling living being reduced to nothing,
with nothing to show for its efforts…
Not if she could do anything about it.
